Sometimes, we may determine that getting one or more of your teeth extracted is the best way to restore your dental health. This may need to be done for a variety of reasons such as irreparable damage, advanced periodontal disease, breakage, poor positioning, tooth crowding, wisdom teeth, or in preparation for orthodontic treatment.
Tooth extractions may not sound like an ideal procedure to undergo, but we make our best efforts to ensure that the procedure is performed in a way that’s comfortable and stress-free.
Before performing an extraction, we will numb your tooth, and nearby gum and jawbone. You may feel some pressure but no pain as we gently dislodge the tooth out of its socket using dental instruments. Some teeth may need to be sectioned before removal. This is generally done when a tooth is very firmly anchored in its sockets or has a curved root.
Once the extraction is over, it is vital for a blood clot to form at the site to stop bleeding and for the natural healing process to begin. We will ask you to bite down on a piece of sterile gauze for about 30 minutes after the procedure is over. Once the clot has formed, it is important not to dislodge it, so we recommend not drinking through a straw, smoking or doing any vigorous activity for up to 24 hours after the procedure.
